In this verse-by-verse study of Joshua 2, Reasoning Through the Bible examines one of the most powerful stories in the early part of Joshua: the faith of Rahab. As two spies enter Jericho, they find refuge in the home of a woman who should have been an unlikely ally. Yet Rahab had already heard what God had done for Israel, and she believed that the Lord had truly given the land into their hands.

This session explores why Joshua wisely sent only two spies, why they stayed in Rahab’s house, what Rahab knew about the God of Israel, and how her confession of faith shows remarkable theology for someone outside the covenant people. The discussion also addresses the moral dilemma Rahab faced, why she protected the spies, and how Scripture later honors her faith.

A major theme in this episode is the meaning of the scarlet cord. Rahab and her family would be spared if they stayed inside the house marked by the scarlet sign. This becomes a vivid picture of salvation, pointing back to Passover and forward to the saving blood of Christ. The study emphasizes that Rahab was not saved by her own strength, but by trusting God and staying under the sign He provided.

Introduction to Joshua's Journey

Speaker 1

Welcome back to the Reasoning Through the Bible podcast . We've been working our way through the book of Joshua in the Bible , so if you have your Bibles , open there and just a summary of where we've gone so far . In the Joshua , of course , is the symbol of the Savior , in the sense that that's what his name means the God who saves . He was the one who had faith when the others didn't , when they were initially being led to the promised land . He's the one that made it through the wilderness march when all the others died off . So here we have in Joshua .

Speaker 1

Joshua is leading the people of Israel into the promised land and we said these are historical truths , but they're also allegorical , symbolic of the life , of salvation . We go from being in the wilderness of lost works , of being a lost person . The Savior then takes us into God's promised land , the land flowing of milk and honey , which is salvation . So that's the picture , but Joshua was a real guy . It's real history . The picture , but Joshua was a real guy . It's real history . Last time , in chapter one , we studied how God promised them that he was going to be there with them , that he would not leave them nor forsake them , and he told them . Have courage , have strength , because I'll be there with you . So here in chapter two we're going to find that he gets ready to actually cross the Jordan .

Speaker 2

So , steve , if you could just read Joshua , chapter two , the first seven verses , and Joshua , the son of Nun , sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies , saying go view the land , especially Jericho . And they went and came out into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there . And it was told to the king of Jericho Behold , men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land . Then the king of Jericho said to Rahab , saying Bring out the men who have come to you , who entered your house , for they have come to search out all the land . But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them . And she said True , the men came to me , but I did not know where they were from .

Speaker 2

And when the gate was about to be closed at dark , the men went out . I do not know where the men went . Pursue them quickly , for you will overtake them . But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof . So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan , as far as the fords , and the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out .

Speaker 1

Okay . So here we have Joshua and he sends in spies . In this instance he sends in two . If you

The Two Spies Enter Jericho

Speaker 1

remember , 40 years earlier Moses had sent in 12 spies . It was very democratic . Moses sent in one from each tribe . And here Joshua doesn't do that , he sends in two , two handpicked men . What happened the first time , when they did it very democratic , and had one from each tribe ? What did they come back saying Ten of them said no way , there's giants in the land .

Speaker 2

There's no way that we're going to be able to take this .

Speaker 1

This time , Joshua didn't make that mistake . He gets somewhat dictatorial and he handpicks people because he wanted to make sure it was the right to men .

Speaker 2

And he also sent them out secretly , so the rest of the people don't know what's going on . He's kind of taking that a little bit of precaution . He's taking these precautions .

Speaker 1

With that thought and with the thought of just in general , has not God already said multiple times I have given it to you , I will be there , you will take it . Why does he need to even send in spies in the first place ? Is this , joshua , showing doubt , or what ?

Speaker 2

Those are part of the things where we obviously don't have every aspect and every little feature of a story that might have happened . We don't have a complete timeline , so it could have been .

Speaker 1

So let's ask it this way If God tells us something I'm wanting you to be in this work , and we know he's there with us does it still make sense to take some wise counsel and some planning and things like that ? This is what I see Joshua doing . Yes , he knows of anybody . Joshua is solid as a rock when it comes to his faith , but he's doing something that just makes practical sense Send in a couple of spies , figure out where everything are . They're still going to have to do some conquests , some military campaigns , and it only makes sense to have some wise planning . And it only makes sense to have some wise planning . And so I think I've seen churches that , oh , we're going to walk out on faith , and they don't plan , they're not prudent with their resources or their planning . I just see Joshua .

Speaker 2

Yes , he has faith in God , but he also does things that's just wise and prudent that any military leader , any leader , any manager would do . And he also gives them specifically he says go view the land but really pay attention to Jericho . Joshua knows and understands this is going to be their first battle .

Speaker 1

So why Jericho ? What's the significance of this town , Jericho ?

Speaker 2

It's a fortified town .

Speaker 1

It was the first major fortified city they were going to bump into and they were going to have to take it Militarily . You're going to have to take it Walled city , he said . Go pay attention to that one . Where did the men stay in verse three ?

Speaker 2

Or verse two , I guess . Yeah , they ended up going to a prostitute , a brothel , into a prostitute's house .

Speaker 1

They stayed in the house of Rahab and her job was a prostitute . Why there ?

Speaker 2

If you also want to blend in and you're a guy , an obvious place would be to go to a place that men would frequent sometimes and also be able to go in and not be seen or not stand out as far as other areas .

Speaker 1

Right . You have to understand how the cities worked in those days . They didn't have the chain motels that we have today . They didn't have public houses that would not cause them to be noticed . People knew everybody and things like that . The only place that strangers would go , that people wouldn't pay much attention , would be this house of prostitution . That's why , also , where do we learn later where her house was ?

Speaker 1

It was also in the city wall , in the city wall , so it's near the edge of the city , so you can get in and get out relatively straightforward . It was just a place where , as you said , a man could go and you not noticed if a stranger came in .

Speaker 2

And I also think that you have a person in Rahab . In that her occupation she's hearing a lot of different information from a lot of different people and social strata that's in the city , so she's not just relegated to one particular social area .

Speaker 1

She's hearing a lot of information . That's where a lot of people are and a lot of information flows through there . So , as far as the military strategy wise place to stay as far as an interpersonal live , a pure life standpoint , was that the best decision ?

Speaker 2

No no .

Speaker 1

Now we have to note , though , here there's no mention in the text of any immorality from these two spies . They hid there because it was a wise place to hide . There's no mention that they partook of the services .

Speaker 2

And they weren't going there to partake of the services .

Speaker 1

Exactly At this point . Then verse 3, . What happens ? The king sent word to Rahab and he's asking bring out the men . What do you think's going through Rahab's mind at this point ? Think of it . She's got spies in there . She knows exactly what they're there for .

Speaker 2

And the king does too . I mean , that's what he said Bring out the man , because they're here to spy . Well , what ?

Speaker 1

do you think's going through her mind at this point ?

Speaker 2

I need to make sure that she doesn't find them here , or else my life's in danger if she does .

Speaker 1

We're going to learn

The King Seeks the Spies

Speaker 1

some things about this woman from just her conversation . But having known what she's about to say , what kind of a personality do you think she has ? Is she kind of shy and timid , or is she kind of bold and straightforward and to the point ?

Speaker 2

I think , based upon the occupation and the lifestyle , probably bold and take charge Somebody that's had to kind of fend for themselves at different times .

Speaker 1

I don't see her as a weak , wimpy kind of woman at all . This is a person that , as you said , has had to deal in some difficult circumstances in her life . She probably had issues growing up or she wouldn't have been a prostitute to start with , and this still happens today . By the way , the people that are prostitutes now oftentimes have a really tough time of life . So she's someone that's street savvy , very direct person , as we're going to see . She doesn't beat around the bush . But here's a major kind of ethical question that comes up with this .

Speaker 1

Here she is , she has these two spies that she's hiding and the law of the land . That's treason . What would happen to her if she were to get caught hiding these guys ? Oh yeah , they'd kill her . I mean that's treason . But yet here we have knocking on her door . The king sent word . Well , when the king sends word , he probably sends it via the police , the strong either soldiers or people that could have soldiers . These are officials knocking on her door saying tell me where these guys are . Now she's faced with a moral dilemma . This is a question of ethics . She either has to lie to the government , lie to the officials and say no , they're not here and protect these innocent men's lives by telling a lie , or she has to obey the law , obey the authorities and turn over innocent men . And what would these kings would have done with these two spies ?

Speaker 2

Oh well , they probably would have tortured them at first to get information out of them , but ultimately they would have killed them .

Speaker 1

Right . They would have tortured them for info and killed them , but they were in Rahab's view . These are innocent men . They had not done anything . They were on the Lord's side . Rahab has an ethical dilemma . There's no way out of this without having some ethical problem , and this is a good example when we come into moral questions of our day . Come into moral questions of our day . What do I do if I'm forced into a situation where we're in a spot ? Whichever way we go morally and ethically , there's good , wise guidance here that God gives us in this story of Rahab . So , the way it works , she is either faced with lying to the government , breaking the law and telling a lie before God Don't lie , I made the top 10 . And don't bear false witness or turn these guys over for innocent , and some very smart people over the centuries have wrestled with these decisions . Well , here's where I would come down , and I think we can support this with Scripture . Where do we see Rahab later in the Bible ? She shows up twice in the New Testament . You remember where it is .

Speaker 2

Yeah , and she's in the Hall of Faith .

Speaker 1

She's in what's called the Hall of Faith , which is Hebrews chapter 11 . There's a list of heroes of the faith she's mentioned in there .

Speaker 2

And then she's also mentioned in the lineage of Jesus .

Speaker 1

She's mentioned in Matthew , chapter 1 . She is specifically mentioned as one of the ancestors , one of the bloodline of Jesus Christ . So she is held up as a hero in the New Testament and yet here she tells a lie . So how does that work ? That's the moral dilemma . We like to think that these issues are nice and clear cut all the time , but they're not .

Speaker 1

We will face moral dilemmas . What do you do if you're in Nazi Germany and they've made it a law to kill Jewish people just because of the fact that they're Jewish ? You either have to break the law or you have to contribute to the death of innocent people . This is real , similar to what Rahab's faced with here . You know , the ethical answer is that there are hierarchies of moral code and in this case , telling a lie is less of a problem than saving somebody's life . You have an evil law that's going to kill an innocent person , so telling a lie , which is a sin , but that's less of a sin than killing an innocent person or contributing to the cause of an innocent person of a sin , than killing an innocent person or contributing to the cause of an innocent person . This would support the concept of if we get into situations where our nation's laws have been passed that violate God's law , then we have to obey God's law before man's law . We obey the law of the land until it forces us into these moral dilemmas .

Speaker 1

Here telling a lie is preferable to contributing or causing the death of an innocent person . That's the moral thing is there's greater and lesser moral codes . So from a concept that's easy to do , the problem comes in . Is that how do I make that determination ? What's a greater or a lesser thing ? Like I could convince myself that telling a lie is really a good thing , because I've convinced myself that this situation I'm in , so if I need to tell a lie to get a job , well , surely God would want me to have a job . Well , no , that's a selfish reason . Sometimes there's difficulty , oftentimes there's great difficulty making these moral and ethical decisions . But we cannot say every time , all the time , tell the truth here to kill these innocent people . We get into these moral dilemmas , and the story of Rahab is one of those great examples of how we make ethical decisions .

Speaker 1

And she was also siding on the side of God decisions , and she was also siding on the side of God . So what happens with us if we get in a situation where there's a municipal law or a national law that causes us to do something wrong ? What do we do ? We side with God , and what do we do if I can't tell ? How do I know that's when you go to pastors , leaders , good Christian counsel and take counsel . There's people that have been in these situations over the centuries and I'm sure it'll happen to someone close to us at some point . So verses 4 and 5 , what does Rahab do ?

Speaker 2

She doesn't deny it outright If you hurry and follow them , you can catch them .

Speaker 1

So help us out a little bit about the city gates and the walls . How does that work and what's the significance of it ?

Speaker 2

Well , so Jericho was about an eight to nine acre site . There's been archaeology , that's been done . They have actually found the city of Jericho and it's an eight to nine acre site . Inside the first wall there's actually two walls one inner wall and then there was a second outer wall and , by the way , in the archaeological digs that they found , they have found dwellings in those outer walls that were there as well . But the gates were open during the day , but they were also shut at certain times at night in order for protection for the city during the night .

Speaker 1

Right , it'd be the same thing if we left the door to our home open all night . Something we don't want is going to walk in . They shut the gates at dark , basically , and it was just to keep predators , both human and animal , from coming into the city . So she tells these people they were here , they left . If you hurry , you can catch them . Verse 7 , what do the king's people do ?

Speaker 2

They pursued them all the way to the Jordan River , basically to the fords of the Jordan River .

Speaker 1

Which brings us to the next one . Can you read verses 8 through 16

Rahab's Confession of Faith

Speaker 1

?

Speaker 2

Yeah . So now , before they lay down , she came up to them on the roof and said to the man I know that the Lord has given you the land and that the terror of you has fallen on us and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you . But we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when he came to Egypt , and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan , to Sihon and Og , whom you utterly destroyed . And when we heard it , our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you . For the Lord , your God , he is God in heaven above and on earth beneath . Now , therefore , please swear to me by the Lord , since I have dealt kindly with you , that you also will deal kindly with my father's household . So the men said to her Our life for yours . If you do not tell this business as ours and it shall come about when the Lord gives us the land that he will deal kindly and faithfully with you .

Speaker 2

And she let them down by a rope through the window , for her house was on the city wall , so that she was living on the wall . And she said to them go up to the hill country so that the pursuers will not happen upon you , and hide yourselves there for three days until the pursuers return . Then afterward you may go on your way . The man said to her we shall be free from this oath to which you have made us swear , unless we come into the land .

Speaker 2

You tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down and gather to yourself into the house your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father's household . It shall come about that anyone who goes out of the doors of your house into the street , his blood shall be on his own head and we shall be free . But anyone who's in with you in this house , his blood shall be on our head if a hand is laid on him . But if you tell this business of ours . And she said , so be it . So she sent them away and they departed and she tied the scarlet cord in the window .

Speaker 1

With that we have the story of what Rahab did with these couple of spies . So there's going to be a battle , and everybody knows it . What does the city of Jericho have on their side ? They've got a walled city . It's heavily guarded , trained soldiers , well fortified . They know the enemy's coming . That's what they've got . From all appearances , they should have the advantage . What does Israel have ?

Speaker 2

They now have secret inside information .

Speaker 1

They've got secret information and they're made up of sheepherders and priests got secret information and they're made up of sheep , herders and priests . So just from a military standpoint , they've got some cool information about the enemy . But do they really have a military advantage here ?

Speaker 2

no , from a human standpoint , not from a human standpoint not from a human standpoint , but they do from a god standpoint , and that's part of the information that Rahab gave to them Exactly .

Speaker 1

So , from a worldly standpoint , israel is far weaker than Jericho , but we know that who's on God's side and who's not , and what's going to end up happening . So look at verse 9 . And what does she know ? What does she tell them ?

Speaker 2

She says I know that this land's been given to you by God .

Speaker 1

Yeah , what has she heard of in verses 10 and 11 ?

Speaker 2

All of the conquering that they did on the other side of the Jordan River , all that happened over there , and also their crossing of the Red Sea . So 40 years yeah , how long ago .

Speaker 1

Was that 40 years earlier they were still thinking about it . I mean , we live in a time when our attention spans about 30 seconds , but this was 40 years ago . They're still afraid of what God had done through Israel . And what words does Rahab use here to describe the feelings of the people in Jericho ?

Speaker 2

They've melted their fear . It's terror has taken over .

Speaker 1

Terror has fallen on us . The people have melted before you . Our hearts melted . No courage remained in us . So does this sound like a people that are in bad shape ? Yeah , I'd say so . What does this tell you about doing the Lord's work ? I mean , imagine it . You're Israel and you're not war-hardened . These people have this huge walled city . They've got all these soldiers . We just came out of herding sheep for 40 years in the desert and we're supposed to go up against these people , but they're more scared of us than we are of

The Scarlet Cord Covenant

Speaker 1

them . We have all the confidence in the world because we've got these promises from God , but Jericho is shaken in the boots , literally . Sometimes the worldly appearances aren't really what's going on , and we need to look at things from God's perspective .

Speaker 2

Even though they're a giant walled city . The people are afraid and we have all the confidence in the world and know that there are people that also know who God is . They might not show it on the outside , but they know who God is and they know his power and what he's capable of . We have that as believers of God on our side . We can go , sometimes boldly , into certain situations because we have we might not think that the other people have the upper hand , but they also might also know that they fear God secretly . They might not show it outside , but they do .

Speaker 1

So look at the last half of verse 11 . This is Rahab talking . Who does Rahab know is behind all of Israel's conquests that he is the God in heaven above and the earth beneath .

Speaker 1

Yeah , she knows it's the true God , the God of Israel , is behind their success . And is her theology pretty good there ? For somebody that didn't grow up in Israel , rather , and didn't have all the blessings of God and didn't grow up memorizing the Torah , she's got pretty good theology , or , as I'm concerned , she knows who's the real God and what he's got of heaven and earth .

Speaker 2

And I think it's important here and we can introduce this at this point everywhere where you see the Lord and the Lord , lord is spelled L-O-R-D .

Speaker 1

In all caps In all capitalizations .

Speaker 2

The word behind that is God's name , jehovah , yahweh as well , but Jehovah , and so I think we sometimes lose that in our reading and our translations and that talk about the Lord , but he has a name and that she actually calls this out here . He says for Jehovah , your God , is the God most high above all heaven and even below the earth as well . So she doesn't just say the Lord , she actually says Jehovah .

Speaker 1

And just to emphasize that not all of our English translations do this , but most of them do . As you just said , in the Old Testament , if it uses all caps , l-o-r-d in all caps , it's using the very name of God . In English we just translate it Lord and we don't always grasp the significance in between the all caps Lord and the Lord with lowercase O-R-D , like an English Lord or something like that . There's a distinction between just Lord and Lord with all caps , in the sense that , as you just said , we don't translate the name , they just translate it Lord . But it's exactly what you were just saying . They're saying Jehovah is God , this specific God , your God , jehovah , god , he's the one that is God in heaven and on earth .

Speaker 1

And I find this amazing because , again , this woman , the Canaanite she didn't grow up learning , but what does she know ? She didn't grow up learning , but what does she know ? This tells us that , like in Romans 1 , even the nonbeliever can look at the heavens and learn some things about the invisible nature of God . Somebody had to make all this stuff so she knows . So we have here a believer in the true God that's just waiting for a follower of God to come in and introduce him to her . I find that just amazing .

Speaker 2

And she gives the personalization . When she says you're God , she's talking about the God of Israel , the God and the nation of Israel . You're God .

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

That's Yehovah , the God of heaven and earth .

Speaker 1

So they make an agreement in verse 14 , and then there's a specific signal in verse 18 . What is that agreement ? What are they supposed to do ?

Speaker 2

The rope that she's supposed to have , a rope that's dangling from her window . That signifies this is the room that you're going to put all of your relatives in for protection , and we'll give the word back . Whenever we attack the city , don't kill the people that are inside the room that has this red or scarlet rope hanging from it .

Speaker 1

So her family , what are their responsibilities ? What are they supposed to do ?

Speaker 2

Be in the house .

Speaker 1

So all they have to do is be in that room , not out wandering around , not out wandering around . What happens if they do go outside wandering around ?

Speaker 2

If they happen to be killed , then it's not on the head of the spies . In other words , they've given them their word that they won't kill her or her family , but they have to be inside the house .

Speaker 1

They have to be inside the house . What's the symbolism here ?

Speaker 2

You have to be in the sanctuary of God and his words and his life .

Speaker 1

Just like Rahab and her family . Do they have to do anything ? Do they have to be strong militarily to save their own lives ? No , all they have to do is what ? Be in that room and hang that scarlet cord out . They can't work to achieve it , they just have to be there . Don't be outside , be inside . So it's another picture of salvation . What do we have to do to be saved ? Can we work our way into God's graces ? No , all we have to do is be inside , underneath the what ? The scarlet cord Happens to be scarlet Just not a chance .

Speaker 1

Here's a trivia question what's another story that we've seen already

The Symbolism of Salvation

Speaker 1

in the Bible that has to do with saving people's lives by putting something scarlet over a doorway ?

Speaker 2

Oh , talking about the blood of the lamb . Back in Egypt , as far as the Passover , when the death angel came , as long as he saw the red blood from the slaughtered lamb on the lentils and the doorpost , he would pass over that house and the people had to be inside the house and the people had to be inside the house .

Speaker 1

It was the last of the ten plagues of Egypt bringing Israel out of Egypt . They had to have the blood over the door Can't work , can't defeat it , you just had to be in the house . Same way we have to be in Christ . We have to be covered by the blood . We have to be in Christ . We can't work our way into saving our own lives . All we have to do is be in and not out wandering around on our own . So isn't that great that I don't have to be good enough . I don't have to live a life good enough to please God . What I do have to do is be under the blood .

Speaker 2

And so the question is are we , are , you , covered by the blood of Christ ? Do we have that scarlet rope that's hanging outside for it to be seen ?

Speaker 1

All of us need to ask that question .

Speaker 2

And are we in the house ?

Speaker 1

Yeah .

Speaker 2

Under the covers .

Speaker 1

So without Jesus' blood we're dead , just like without the scarlet cord they're dead . We can't hide behind our walls . We can't go some other way . There's only one way . There's not multiple paths . I can't say , well , I'm so smart , I'm educated , or I've got enough money . I've got enough money , I've got enough fame . It's only if you're in the house with the scarlet over it that's going to save you .

Speaker 2

And we'll come at other times and talk in more detail about it , but that is that sacrificial blood . That's the saving grace , or the saving blood that we'll talk about in more detail in other sessions .

Speaker 1

At this point in the story , the soldiers that were looking for him . They take off and Rahab lets the men down out of the window and they make this agreement about the scarlet cord In this chapter . How long did it take Rahab to obey in verse 21 ? Last part of verse 21 , as soon as she sent him away ? Oh , yes , she dropped it out .

Speaker 2

She dropped it out , did she wait ?

Speaker 1

Nope , she did it now . When is the day of salvation ?

Speaker 2

Now .

Speaker 1

Today is the day of salvation . We take advantage of it now . We don't put it off . Well , we've got time until next week , next month . No , today is the day of salvation .

Speaker 2

Rahab obeyed immediately , and she knew the attack was coming , but she didn't know the exact time , she didn't know the method , she didn't know the way . She knew it was coming , but she didn't know when or how or any of that other information . So , therefore , put the scarlet rope out now , today , so that it's there . Don't wait and I'm not caught unaware . Don't wait that it's there .

Speaker 1

Don't wait and .

Speaker 2

I'm not caught unaware . Don't wait , don't wait , don't wait .
